Chicago FC United PDL vs Christos FC • Wed. May 31st

Chicago (May 18, 2017) - 2017 marks the first year of the Chicago FC United PDL team and first ever appearance in the US Open Cup which is combined of collegiate, FC United and FC United Academy players.

The PDL (Premier Development League) features 72 franchises in four conferences throughout the United States and Canada, including 16 clubs that are owned and operated by a professional club, or that hold a partnership with a professional club. The PDL has proven to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world, with nearly 70 percent of all MLS selections since 2010 having PDL experience. 

Kyle Retzlaff of FC United Development Academy is the General Manager of Chicago FC United. Technical staff includes Charlie Trout (coach lead), Gonzalo Segares, Graham Brennan, Steve Morris, Stan Anderson whom are all under the guidance of Jamie Smith, FC United Academy Director.

Chicago FC United and Grand Rapids FC played their opening round US Open Cup match on Friday, May 12. Chicago FC United used a late Grand Rapids own goal to propel them to a 1-0 First Round victory.

Chicago FC United and Pittsburgh Riverhounds competed in Round Two of the US Open Cup on Wednesday, May 17th. University of Wisconsin-Madison talents, Mark Segbers and Thomas Barlow each scored a goal for Chicago FC United, while Michigan State talent, Ryan Sierakowski, netted the late goal to secure advancement into the next round. Sawyer Jackman, UIC, was in goal again and earned the win as the Chicago FC United #1 Goalkeeper.

Three PDL teams, including Chicago FC United, and one regional amateur club (Christos FC) are advancing to Round Three of Four of the US Open Cup. Chicago FC United will play Christos FC in the Third Round of the tournament on May 31st. This means that fans will be guaranteed at least one amateur vs Major League Soccer game in Round 4.

All Third Round matches in the 2017 US Open Cup are scheduled to kick off on May 31st at 7:00pm CST at Loyola Chicago, (6336 N. Hoyne, Chicago) while MLS teams will enter the competition in the Fourth Round of the tournament from June 13-14th. The winner of the Third Round game will advance to travel and face DC United.
